Tea Therapy
Tea therapy traces its origins back to Shennong (神农氏). The Shennong Bencao Jing (The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica), the earliest known medical text, records:"Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs, encountering seventy-two poisons in a single day, but was able to detoxify himself with tea."This is the earliest recorded mention of tea therapy in China.
Philosophy of Tea Therapy
The 24 Solar Terms in China are a traditional lunisolar calendar system that guides agricultural activities and daily life. These solar terms reflect seasonal changes and are deeply connected to Chinese agriculture, health, and traditional culture, including practices like Tea Therapy (节气茶疗) to harmonize the body with nature.
GuGu Tea Therapy integrates the essence of Yi (I Ching), medicine, and Daoism, emphasizing the harmony between humans, tea, nature, and the Five Elements. It aims to awaken self-awareness and energy to achieve self-healing. Tea therapy advocates a lifestyle of self-cultivation through tea, appreciating the art of brewing, the sweetness of tea, and the nourishment of the heart. It upholds the principles of balance and harmony, the essence of nature, the elegance of simplicity, and the courtesy of ethical relationships.
Tea Therapy and Literature
Lu Tong, a Tang Dynasty poet, was deeply passionate about tea throughout his life. His famous poem, "Seven Bowls of Tea", established the artistic and literary significance of tea therapy, making it a method of self-cultivation among scholars. He was later revered as the "Tea Immortal" by future generations.
《七碗茶》-茶仙卢仝
一碗喉吻润,二碗破孤闷;
三碗搜枯肠,唯有文字五千卷。
四碗发轻汗,平生不平事,
尽向毛孔散。
五碗肌骨清,六碗通仙灵;
七碗吃不得也,
唯觉两腋习习清风生。
"Seven Bowls of Tea" – Tea Immortal Lu Tong
One bowl moistens the throat and quenches thirst.
Two bowls dispel loneliness and melancholy.
Three bowls cleanse the bowels of all worries,
Leaving only the wisdom of five thousand scrolls (the essence of literature).
Four bowls bring a light sweat,
Washing away all life's injustices through every pore.
Five bowls purify muscles and bones.
Six bowls open the path to immortality.
Seven bowls—I can drink no more!
Only the cool breeze rises beneath my arms,
Lifting me toward enlightenment.
This poem beautifully illustrates how tea is not just a drink but a path to physical and spiritual purification, promoting relaxation, clarity of mind, and overall well-being.
